Odp: [sdiy] +/- 9v synth circuits

little late response, but I'd like to add my 0.03 (enter your currency here)

My initial design for modular was +/-9V and that was the high voltage for
supplying opamps, while all important stuff is supplied from +/-5.
My quad VCO and 5-stage VC envelope are done this way.
It was more than enough for VCO, and just right for ADDSR.
I could attenuate slightly the VCF and be ok with 9V even there.
Later I switched to +/-12V but that's different story.
I also have and idea of +/-3V portable modular synth, and I'm sure
it's doable. +/-1.5V is also probably possible but that would be 
a little too far. And I don't think using DC/DC converters in a synth
is good idea, so 4 AA cells are the goal.

If you want 9V, consider using multiple LION rechargeable
batteries. there are nice cheap 3.6V 1000mAh packs out there.
Stack 6 of them and you have +/-11V with much more capacity
than 9V blocks and comparable.
