Thanks for the replies. I found the schematic (and the presence of
obsolete parts), but sadly I don't happen to have a living breathing
rocking horse.
I still the think the idea of a keyboard/sequencer is cool - I may still
try to design and build something similar using more commonly sourced
parts.

It's a good idea IF (and that's a big if) you can obtain the right
shift registers. They're rarer than rocking horse droppings.
