[sdiy] A Frequency Standard for Poor People?

I use a Rockland 5100 'programmable frequency 
synthesizer' that I got off ebay.
Search 5100* +(rockland, wavetek).
0.001Hz to 1.999999999MHz in 0.001Hz steps.
Of course, from ebay means it's not calibrated.
But mine read <1 ppm at 1MHz. They seem to go 
for something like 30-100USD. None there right 
now. Sine wave output only, why no pulse? 
And the fan is a bit noisy. I like 
all the knobs though.

It's not using an external reference, so it 
might be missing the whole point of what 
you're after.
