My first scope was a Bell and Howell Kit (Heathkit) that I swapped a radio for.
It made everything easier until the HV winding on the transformer went. The swap
was for two - one not working. Guess what was wrong with second. Same HV
problem.
I bought a solid state Heathkit for $20 with no vertical display looking for a
transformer. When I opened it up there are lots of solid core wire with nicks
where the insulation was stripped. Look at it wrong and one of the wires would
break at the nick. I reworked the wires and it worked fine. It's still on my
bench now. I'm thinking of replacing the vertical channel with an opamp to
increase the input impedance and bandwidth (5M Hz).
