These are the ones I've used in my PS-3200 clone.
Carbon, yes - but I was happy to find a pull pot _at_all_.

Linear taper: if the "loaded linear" response (resistor from
wiper to gnd) isn't good enough for your application
(and often this is not good enough), then you can build
a simple expo converter and control a VCA.
Use a Vactrol as VCA for low noise and zero offset.
Speed doesn't matter here, so the vactrol should be
fine. And even if you carbon pot gets a little scratchy
over time, the Vactrol will filter out much of the noise.

Just some ideas - it all depends on your application
of course. What are you building?
