Hi Paul,

I'd avoid film as it crinkles with age.  Not good.

You could try colored acrylic (Perspex (TM)) from a model shop or sign
makers.

Both the above have a shiny, polished surface which isn't so good
visibility as it reflects light.  The proper stuff has a matt surface to
cut down on reflections (think anti-glare).

Rapid Electronics do display filter material with a matt surface.
