Doug,
If the book has no colors (or no grey levels) you can start from
scratch scanning it in B/W and save the images as lzw compressed
tiff. Tiff saves dpi info and lzw compression is lossless.
Jpeg spend too much info for sharpen edges (text and schematics
have a lot of sharpen edges). This is useful for delivering images
that further can be reprinted or converted locally to a jpeg with
"smoothing-edges" option.
On the other hand if book have greys or colors...well, tiff
fails brutally here....(act as you never received this post :-)
