Well, Grant, lets see: Its signal/noise, so you take
the noise output and divide by the noise of the
system... ;-)

Once upon a time we built a DTMF detector that would
decode tones that were buried 10 dB below the noise
floor. It turns out that if you know what it is you're
trying to detect, its not that hard to find it. Its
kinda like holding a template up to the noise and when
the signal shows up it shines through the template.
