I usually use mica for critical pf values. Its nice and stable, pretty low
in dielectric absorption, and pretty temp stable.

Usually the larger capacitance values are very large, physically... and
mica is expensive.

I LOVE mica for really high current applications like snubber caps on
high power inverters... maybe 1600V rating and all the current you can
possibly eat (with a cap that big).  But for synth-diy I wouldn't go over
maybe 470pF and 100V.  Usually I like mica for 100pF or less...
