[sdiy] Microcontrollers

Anyone out there playing with pretty chunky highspeed microcontrollers?
I'm trying to build a module right now and I have to throw around a good
bit of data.  basically I'm sampling two sources at 44khz or so, 
I'm going to some minor tweaking to the data internally, then spit out
8 times the data.  Also need a fair bit of ram to buffer things with.
I'm kinda leaning towards using a powerpc chip but wondered what other
people were using for this...

Wish Atmel made a really really beefy AVR...
