well, thank you kids for all the response. my wife came up with a solution
that also seems to have potential: porcelain paint. it's sortof like a
coloured laquer, and after painting you put the thing in the oven for a
while to get hard. it actually leaves a very hard finish which is very
difficult to chip. we tried it and i only managed to chip it after hacking
at it with a screwdriver for a while. i'll try a few of the different things
out and then report back..
