Ok, but still I think it is the best option.

I doubt the BC549 will be close to a ultra matched pair in their noise 
specs. (This is an app that is demanding the large geometry devices...)
So you might end up spending that money you save on the transformer, on 
the dual transistors.

I built a mic preamp using not much more than a transformer and a NE5534 
and that thing is dead quiet. (Ok, I had the transformer salvaged from 
an old mixer.)
