...we use the same tool we used in the studio during the 70's to 
document settings on a large mixing console:

A camera.

We used to use a Polaroid Instant camera, taking perhaps a dozen shots 
to capture every knob, button, and fader. Today we use a digital camera 
to shoot the modular (also Mini, 2600, and any other non-programmable 
device), and archive the shots with the recordings (or with the 
ProTools session files, as appropriate).

It's so much faster and easier than paper...
