Interesting way to build a distortion unit. One way could be to build a
normal preamp with a transformer and then add the ability to insert a
dead current in one of the windings. This should be a way to control the
iron core saturation. A larger current should give more distortion
sooner. This would probably clip the signal closer and closer to the
midpoint, but in a soft way since the transformer still will be doing
its job but with a lesser and lesser inductance.
