For a current example of a possible mounting method, check out Paul's
photos of the Buchla, in particular the b257:
http://www.synthtech.com/pix/buchla/b257/
Summary: metal front panel, then behind that is a PCB with pots, switches,
banana sockets (yeah!), then behind that is the circuit PCB, with three
board-to-board connectors joining the two.
One way, certainly, of building up a panel. And the advantage of mounting
the pots on a subframe is that the holes for the pot shafts will be
covered by the knob.
