[sdiy] Which cheap pots are acceptable?

Are they generally ok where you would use a 100k pot, as long as it is not a
specific resistance within a voltage divider, or a series resistance
controlling current to something?  I mean, in the usual voltage divider
attenuator application it should be ok to go up to 300k, yes?
