If it makes you feel better, it's only a small minority of Americans that
have direct access to such an assortment of surplus shops. It's mostly the
Californians that have it so nice. Oh yeah, many of these places have a web
site and sell parts to anyone in America (if not the whole world), but
there is no substitute for actually walking into a physical store and doing
some browsing. From what I understand, a lot of the really odd and cool
stuff never makes it into the catalogs or web sites, usually because it is
in very limited quantity or it hasn't been sorted.
Even living in America, I know how you feel. There are *no* surplus shops
remotely near where I live. (That means within an 8-hour round trip, if not
longer.)
