Its more the shock when you have your amp fully turned up and running 
and *then* try to connect the signal source. THat and the damage it 
could mean for your speakers.

Right, most (but not all) opamps are shortcircuit proof. The resistor 
you often see is there to avoid oscillation from a capacitive load. But 
it also helps to avoid shorts.
