That kid needed a lesson in vacuum systems. 

One thing you just don't do:
use brass or aluminum in a cyclotron chamber. 
Degassing those metals is a nightmare.

Nor do you use plastic tubing....

I'm still amazed he got any readings. Also amazed the
811As didn't explode in his pimply face. He was running 
them way past the maximum dissipation. 572Bs would 
have been a better choice.
