[sdiy] cheap and decent reel to reel recommendations?

any veterans of tape splicing/musique concrete have
recommendations for a decent and affordable reel to
reel machine?  i would like to explore some of the
tape techniques that i take for granted on computers. 


it needs to be affordable, and i would like to modify
it to have variable speed with a pot (unless of course
thats a feature).  so far ive seen some interesting
ureh and akai models, but im looking for suggestions.
