[sdiy] cheap and decent reel to reel recommendations?

One machine I didn't see mentioned is the Teac 40-4. It is sort of like an
industrial grade 3340. It is built like a tank. However, the capstan is
run by a synchronous motor, so, it will not have variable speed (except for
the two that you can select). If you were industrious, you could replace
the capstan motor with a servo motor and make it variable speed (since you
did mention you were willing to modify).
