Sure. To recreate an MN3005 you need to build 4096 sample&holds plus a way
to clock it. Using surface mount tightly packed it should only be able a
foot square.
To give you an idea, I've built 20 stages of BBD using tubes. Its rather
large to say the least. I seem to have gathered up some shreds of sanity
but should I lose them again I have a layout that should get me about 100
stages of tube BBD in 8U of rack, which means I should be able to make a cheap
flanger in 2 racks... With 20 stages, I pass signal, and the signal is
delayed by a tiny bit, and it even sounds sorta like what I put in...
BBD's are still being made in china ( something I seem to like to repeat quite
a bit ). They are cheap. Stock up now! Only 2048 stage but they seem to
work well enough.
