That's the spirit! 

Work with whatever fabrication technology you feel comfortable with.
There's no reason I know of that prevents a synth from being built on
perfboard. 

Even if it takes you longer to build it this way, you'll be much happier
actually finishing something eventually--as opposed to eternally putting
things off because you might not be comfortable doing things like etching
circuit boards, soldering surface mount parts, or whatever.
