I joined the thread late, but this is how I interpret it, too.

I've seen emitter degradation in Moog VCAs, with a trimpot, where
you buy your improoved symmetry (and improoved temperature drift
of symmetry) with a reduced range of linear control. (VCAs "compress"
at higher control currents, where further decreasing of re by Iabc
will become ineffective because of the external Re.)

But I don't think increasing the emitter resistance will do any good
on an expo converter, will it?
