To clarify, degeneration makes a single transistor "worse", it only 
improves matching with another transistor. On an expo converter you 
want the lowest possible rbe you can get (Rene Schmitz has something 
about this on his site I think), so to improve matching here you'd 
better use parallel transistors, which gives better rbe and better 
matching. This is also in principle how the "real" matched pairs are 
constructed internally. For the price of one matched pair you get close 
to 100 SMT transistors...
