I have been using TL08X amps but.. I have found that the LF444 is very good
and it draws about 1/5 the current. The slew rate seems pretty good for
audio applications. I'm still experimenting. The LT1112/LT1114s (see
http://www.linear.com/pdf/lt1112.pdf) are awesome but a little pricey. They
have great specs and low current drain. I have several tubes of these that I
got for free (and legally) but that is a long story.

Awesome. When you say "best" are you referring to an overall performance
figure or something specific?

That 4558 may be the worlds cheapest, but it is the sound of so many things.
The old Tascam 4-track was littered with those.
The Yamaha 802 mixer that I had used them, and only them, and it was a noisy
piece of crap. The list goes on...
