You, of all people, should do that. Start of with the articles, then work your
way through the Thesis. It is a good reading.
Do spend the time to understand the rotation of the 4 vectors in one direction.
Next up is to understand why rotation in one direction is easy where as the
other is severly damped. Once you've "got it" you see it as quite ingenous
actually.
Also, you learn about all the downsides of other frequency shifter solutions,
which I think might be just what you want to learn anyway.
