Perception of loudness is logarithmic, so an expo response of a volume knob
("log pot") makes sense, if you have to cover a large range. A lin pot makes
sense if you want fine adjustment of the last 10dBs or so (from -10dB
to 0dB), and don't need resolution for the range below.

I have a theory why HiFi amplifier manufacturers often use a lin
pot instead of a log pot: When you crank it up halfway, you're
supposed to think that you still have a lot of power reserve
(the amp appearing more powerful than it is!), while you're
actually just 6dB below maximum.
