IMHO it probably comes from an addiction to a technique that can be used
to reduce noise. "If it's good for one piece, why not use it on all?".
And then as you point out, it's a matter of degree. Also, I think that
there may be some über-paranoia about noise. I don't like noise either,
and we all know that it's impossible to completely eliminate, but if I
can't hear it, I don't care and I'd prefer to have unmodified dynamics.
