I built a memory extention into my DX7. This is quite easy because it 
has a RAM chip solely dedicated to patch storing. You probably won't 
find this on newer synths :-)
This IC is even in a socket.

I also replaced the ROM in one cartridge with a self-programmed 
(bigger) EPROM and squeezed some switches (for bank select) into that 
cartridge. But this did involve "breaking into the box", since the 
cartridge was glued together ;-)
