I used to work for a company that sometimes would quote a really high
price, if they didn't want to actually take on a certain custom job. It can
indeed backfire. Sometimes the customer actually takes you up on the offer.

They also tend to expect more than perfect quality, in return for the extra
money. This leaves you with a task you didn't really want to do, and a
customer with greatly raised expectations--who will often nag and quibble
over the slightest conceivable issue. It's often not a happy situation to
be in, even if the money is good. Money isn't everything.
