So that's why it didn't work that well... yes, Google has unfortunately
replaced the webpages with good organization and cross-linking that was the old
ways of doing stuff. Altavista was only a good way of finding new entry-points
to the web for a particular topic. Different groups of people create a fairly
dense interlinkage, but then similar interest but for other reason separate
groups can have a weak interlinkage between the dense connected links and this
is where search-tools aid in helping out.

Indeed. Back in the old days I was sweeping the web manually looking around for
info, following links and bookmark like hell. These days those searches is
topped by a google-search and then usually a handfull of entries down and then
only shallow following unless I struck an odd strain of gold.
