I don't think there's any need to mess with a signal transformer.

I recently built a cracklebox from a schematic posted online.  I opted 
to not include a speaker because my case (an altoids box) was too 
small, and I just wanted to use it as a line source anyway.  

I skipped the transistor amplification stages and just took the signal 
out of the opamp through two resistors to ground.  I connected a 
capacitor between the two resistors and soldered the other end to the 
tip conductor of the 1/4" jack.  

This cut the signal level to an amplitude that will work easily with 
my other stuff and blocks DC at the output.  I just tried different 
resistor and capacitor values until I was pleased.
