One half of the power supply will probably just not work. You could see what
it would do by just connecting one 9V battery. The single 18V AC wall wart
with the 2 diodes and filter caps (and I would add LM78L12 regulators) is
probably your best and simplest bet.
You could also make a battery holder that accomodates larger batteries which
would last longer and provide more current. The original design uses very
little current so I take it you have added some additional circuitry (right
on! :-) )
