[sdiy] Rechargeable battery synths

Dear DIY synthers,
I am going to throw my first question out to this list. --
I build compact, low power analog synths for performance art projects --
theremins, joysticks, giant ribbon / wire controllers... etc. I prefer to
keep these battery powered -- each one is a seperate instrument and needs
maximum portability and wireless operation. I keep them on a table on stage
and whip them out for solos and improvisations.
So -- I have a PAiA theremax which I modded to run at 12 Vdc and 300
ma... My own designs are built with NiMH batteries in mind, but I can't
think of a good battery setup to power the PAiA theremax kit. Would a cell
phone battery be good? Keep in mind that I modded the kit to run at higher
current than the typical theremax kit (with great results for the tone).
Any suggestions?
