>Ahh but sound? Of course that's in the ear of the behearer ;)
And this is where the ear is likely to fail. I remember a nice contest
in the German Keyboards magazine a couple of years ago, where Peter
Gorges programmed "typical" sounds on a variety of machines and you had
to guess which sound came from what machine.
It was almost impossible to get it right. (Even after knowing what to
look, erm, hear for, it was still pretty hard on some examples.)
So tell the audience that some sound comes right out of a DSP box --
although it's indeed coming from analog equipment -- and people will
"hear" that it's indeed digital. Tell them it's coming from analog
equipment -- while it comes from a DSP box -- and people then will say
"see, *that* is warmth".
This is why one should do double blind tests :)
>How many people program absynth/reactor? Very Few. NI even made a version
>that only plays finished instruments, that should tell you something.
How many people programmed their DX7? How many people programmed their
K5(000)? Sheesh, how many people really programmed their M1 or D50?
There's a reason why companies make a living from selling sounds...
