I think this is with open CMOS inputs, that can oscillate and draw
excessive power. With standard opamps, i did not see this happen,
but with FET input opamps (like the LM324), even the slightest
charges can lead to full on/off switching and indeed cause
clicking noises. But in most cases, the inputs seem to go to one
of the poer rails, and the output locks up, and nothing happens.

But just to be sure, if i have a a spare opamp, i tie the inputs to
whatever potential is handy (layout-wise), and leave the output
pin unused.
