I am building the one from www.ucapps.de (based on the midibox platform).
You can get the expensive ICs (maxim DACs)  as free samples direct from
maxim.
The mid-to-cv design they have on the site allows for 10 gates and 8 pitch
CVs, all fully configurable.
Mine is 3/4 built and cost me less than $50. The priciest part is the 1/4"
jacks and rack case (if you choose to buld one that way).
