Found where to disable it. After restart, sound defaults to the Phase 88 -
Bingo!

No more volume control - when I click the volume slider on WinDVD, the sound
goes
away completely. Ok, I can adjust the volume at the amplifier.

But the best part is yet to come.

I just tried if I could re-enable SoundMAX. Just to be sure.
And you know what? The compression is gone! Where ever this compression
had been selected (and I still have no clue), now it's defaulted to no
compression.

Thanks for the quick help - now I can enjoy the music!
