yes a few interesting things have been done with them (not me though).

thats Osamu Hoshuyama's page and he clearly states that you should 
understand the circuits before building, but even if not, I think that 
VCF could be built by most. also, the most interesting thing i've seen 
is the linear VCA using two of them, one in a feedback loop. There's a 
edn article about this by mike irwin (don't have the link) but you can 
see an example of it here:
