"Lumex has blue LEDs with boost converters so as to work at 1.5 volts. One
is available from Digi-Key with catalog number 67-1876. However, this is not
a very bright one - it appears to be intended to have low power
consumption." - from a FAQ.
But, another approach, if yu can toggle the output of the micro tio make a
square wave, is to drive a voltage doubler from it, then you have 5v and the
world is your oyster ;D
