The cheap and rather soft wood they widely sell here (Germany)
is Kiefer (pine) and Fichte (spruce). More expensive, and much harder,
and still widely available is Buche (beech).

Speaking of the stuff I can get in DIY stores. (But since I've selected
wood for the parquet in my living room, I've learned that there are
dozends of variations of just these 3 types, some quite valuable
ones among them.)

It's hard to get something more valuable for DIY purpose.

At first, I had my mind set on building the cabinet for my JH-3200 from
walnut, but that was nearly imposible. Eventually my brother (who did
the woodwork) talked me out of it. We used cheap wood (pine, or spruce?
I don't remember), and used stain to give it a darker colour.
Only the structure gives away the nature of the cheaper wood, but I like
it even better that way:

Important: If you have a wooden bands inside, to fix a front panel etc,
these should be made from a harder wood (beech), to avoid wear from
repeatedly unsrewing and screwing it.

JH.
