I'm not sure that will work. I've always heard that they
need about 100V to light up at all, and beyond that the
voltage doesn't make much difference. But I've never
thought to try that. I've got a couple of EL ropes at
home. Maybe tonight I'll try to light them up with a
modular VCO output. If I can find them...
If you try it, let us know. I'd be curious to find out
what you find.
As for the multi-color ones, I could see something like
a combination of several colors, with some simple RC
lowpass filters on the input of some of them so that
they don't light up until the frequency gets higher.
Then you get several steps in color, which is not quite
what you asked about, but it's in that direction.
