Some Old Military aircraft used a screen printed perspex panel on top of
their alloy front panels. The final screening was black and left the letters
clear, over a translucent white layer. There were bulb holders that put the
glass of the bulb in the perspex layer. The result being well lit and
dimmable panel lettering. I replicated this a long time ago as a student,
using fibre glass PCB front panels and having the board dull nickel, (I
think), plated and then laquered. I then illuminated it from behind, using
the largely still coppered front as a screen. I don't know if the plastic
stock is still available, though the screen print version might be workable.

Just a thought
