I'll use the opportunity to repeat the mantra :

  I will not use JPEG for schematics and diagrams.
  I will not use JPEG for schematics and diagrams.
  I will not use JPEG for schematics and diagrams.

Use lossless compression. For image formats, PNG, TIFF or GIF.
For document formats, PDF and DjVu both support at least one
lossless compression format ; that's the one to use.
