[sdiy] AI code generation

Data centers do consume a huge amount of energy and water.

Correct on the first point, wrong on the second. Almost every data centre in Europe uses closed loop cooling so once the system is filled there is little further usage.

USA as usual is different in that use evaporating towers which do waste water.

But to put some numbers on it, all the data centres in the world use less water than all the golf courses in the world 🙂

Well Matthew, suggesting to people that their arguments are irrelevant is not exactly Socratic dialogue either.

Data centers do consume a huge amount of energy and water. So do many other things: transport, heating, food. One big difference is that with AI most people don't see or struggle to quantify the value it generates. To be honest, so do academics. AI is still a huge, global gamble, both economically and resource-wise. We're not sure yet how or where the return on investment will come from, or who will benefit. There will be loosers as well as winners, and I don't think it's unreasonable for people to have concerns, especially since most of us didn't have a say in any of this. I do think it's unfair to dismiss those concerns as moralistically and psychologically rooted, and therefore not worth discussing objectively.

I was far more inspired by Chris, Tim and others talking about how they're actually using these tools. That's real value - thanks for sharing!

have a lot of fun,

Martin

I'm happy to have the link widely distributed, but calling people that is
unlikely to help convince them..
