future buchla devices

2008-07-12 by cray5656

hi all

I was playing with my sons mini spinning top in a a4 size container
enjoying watching it bounce off the walls and change direction and
eventually slow down.

I then saw this http://gizmodo.com/tag/Fullpower-MotionX_Poker/

and started to think it would be great to have a device that you could
shake like the above and it send out midi/ control voltage to my modular..

My question is ,,,,is this possible has someone done this? if so who
could I talk to to make it happen?

It would make a great random generator for experimental music

I dont own an ipod touch or iphone but would get one just to do the above.

I think a good start would be to buy this book:

Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking

Hi
I think you need an accellerometer made to transmit midi

You should have a look at this stuff:

http://www.steim.org/steim/junxion_v3.html

I think the modifed game controllers he describes, using Junxion to midi mapping, then midi to 225e, should come close, maybe?

This is further down the rabbit hole:

One day, hopefully! Wish I were smarter...

And this:

At some point as Ezra mentioned, if the 200e gains OSC, projects along what Ross is
suggesting could really open up.

I have not user the eowave stuff. it is perhaps more accessible than
the steim stuff. I was at steim for a week last year and used their
junxion board+software. It is more diy in nature but that software is
great because you can do a lot of scaling, calibration and other
processing that is neccesary when dealing with the kind of sensors
they are made for. These sensors often differ in response and changes
over time. For example the accelerometer and tilt sensors needs to be
scaled and filtered for noise to use it.
