An album of explorations

2010-09-24 by Todd Barton

Dear All,
Just a quick note to share some Buchla 200e sonic creations from
my summer vacation.

First, a short album, Ausprobieren, consisting of short experiments and explorations influenced by my obsession with the style of music
coming from the electronic studios of the 1950’s and 60’s. Go here to download
the album/artwork/notes:

https://files.me.com/bartonmusic/k1w56k

Second, a set of four ringtones derived from the
aforementioned album:

https://files.me.com/bartonmusic/9v4l12

And, lastly, also from the album, a set of ten “single-shot”
percussive “hits” of varying moods:

https://files.me.com/bartonmusic/rvz4on

All compositions created on a nine-module Buchla 200e
Electric Music Box:

266e-259e-261e-281e-292e-291e-285e-206e-222e

All best wishes and enjoy!

Todd

Hi Don,

Ah. . . glad you found the notes. In general I would create a new patch everyday and then tweak it to get upwards of 30 different variations. Then record while scrolling through the variations. Then edit and layer, mix and match to create each etude. As it turned out one day was spent on "pads" (etude 12 and 16), another on white noise filtering, another on ring modulation (pure rings) etc. These were either self-generating systems or triggered and morphed in real time with the 222e touch plates.

Oh. . . and here are a few videos to go along with some of those tunes.

Buchla loves nagra!

2010-09-24 by Giorgio Sancristoforo

:)

Dear Buchla folks,
I see there's a a lot of inspiration around here :)

This is my latest etude with a Nagra IV-L and Buchla.

Enjoy

Giorgio,

This is really cool! How'd you set up the Nagra to act as a tape echo? Did
you just create a small tape loop and the Nagra has functionality to record
and play at the same time? Or did you have to modify it?

Thanks for sharing,
Peter

Hi Peter, thanks!
I've cutted 78cm of tape, made a loop with a normal scotch tape, then sent the sound sound to the Nagra from Ch3 of the Buchla.
The Nagra output was plugged to a 230e, then to a 210e routed to ch3, so to fed-back to the Nagra. No modification needed, you just need to select TAPE on the Nagra line output.

forgot to say...
you must also hear what comes from the nagra, so its output is also sent to Buchla CH2

thank you for sharing, giorgio.

nagras are lovely lovely, i recently added a iv-s to my iii. ;-]

scotch tape can be mean... it gives off a bit of oil under pressure... splicing tape from ampex or normec for a happier nagra.

Yeah you're right, I need to find splicing tape.. not easy here...
however the tape was not too tight.

I hope to get a 4-s soon too. But that's not cheap as this one..

those were really cool Todd, thanks for posting them.
you might like some stuff i did earlier this year in a similar sort of
vein. no buchla in it (i didn't get any until a couple of months ago)
but all modular synth + the odd voice sample.

Hi Sandy,

Glad you liked, thanks. Enjoyed your "tape" piece.
And regarding "odd voice sample" I was able to
create a little cylon voice just with the buchla,
you might enjoy:

Thanks for sharing this. Got me motivated enough to get my Space Echo
in a feedback loop with the 210e. Interesting work, now I want a
Nagra. What a beautiful machine.

Re: [200e] Buchla loves viagra!

I just love the image all icy blue with excellent technology :-)

I did a screen capture and made the image my desktop.

PLUS the vid is great too! Love the tape loop. I would love a Viagra :-)

It inspired me to get out my Behringer Vintage Time Machine.

My 24wls should be here next week :-) I cant believe its been 2 weeks of
looking at my modules in a box :-(

Well, should anyone out there desire to shed their 296 in favor of the 296e -
please email me privately.
I'd very much like to buy/trade for an original!

Thanks,

Dear Buchlidians,

Here's a new experiment of processing a waterphone with my
200e and a couple of moogerfoogers. I'm using the freq. shifter
and ring on the Buchla and also triggering some oscillators and
filters -- the Buchla is most recognizable around 1:51.
