Thanks to some in sights to this calculator from this group and the
groups support I finally got my basic simple mind to make it work.
People in the group gave me links and ideas about where to look for
how to do things that would have taken much more time by trial and
error programming. Thanks to all of you. 

Some of the things that happened with the link seemed random and
trying over and over again to make things work on the link kit that
came with the calculator I succeeded in setting up what I was looking
for. Funny some of the text programs went into the calculator no
problem some caused errors and I needed to create the programs on the
calculator directly. I hope to eventually figure out how to use the
DBug program. Or find one that I understand better. 

I put my programs to set up the calculator to function the way I
wanted it to in the files area of this site. 

Actually I am impressed with the programming power and ease of use of
this calculator. It has way more things than I can imagine using but
we will see about that as time goes on. Maybe I will learn some tricks
from this group to more fully use the calculator's power and
functionality.  It is probably hard to show all the programming tricks
possible with examples in the user guide. I think the user guide is
very helpful but some things are not laid out clearly. One trick is
the making of a list into a customer variable like I needed to do to
make all the key assignments with one variable name KSTO. I did not
see this explained anywhere but I did make it work so I am happy.

The program editor and tree structure is very easy to use. Assignments
of any key on the key board to rearrange functions or make them
available make it a joy to use. The only thing about key assignments
that is disappointing is there is no way to attach a custom overlay
for your key assignments.

Anyway it was fun to program an HP calculator again and I hope to
learn a lot more about programming it by being part of this group.
