Hello, group!

I'm new to the group and new to the 50g, though not new to HP calculators. My first was an HP-35 that I got just about exactly 32 years ago. I loved that machine. Much later, I had an HP-48GX which unfortunately was in luggage that went missing. I passed on the 49 on account of the lukewarm reception it got, but, with my new 50g, I'm back in the fold. My first steps have been to patch HPTalx-1.3.0 so that I can connect to my Linux box. I put the patch in the Files section. The Linux box was upgraded with a flash reader so that I could upgrade the ROM to 2.09 and install Emacs, Nosy and OT49 on the HP. Thanks to this list and its members for the posts that pointed out where to obtain these tools. Lately I have been using the CAS "Maxima" at home and at work. The idea of having CAS-to-go on my HP is really intriguing. Along these lines, does anyone know what the relation is between Maple and Erable? (Erable means "Maple" in English IIRC.) I think I read somewhere that the HP-50g's CAS is based in part on Erable. I know that Maple (a commercial system) is a successor of Macsyma (on which is based Maxima). Apart from being interesting in itself, it also occurs to me that it might be possible to work on the same problem in the Maxima and HP-50g environments. I think that would be excellent. If anybody has any suggestions, complaints, further patches, etc., for HPTalx, please let me know. Ricky
